When Looking for Books to Read... - Part 1

Once you pick up your very first novel, it's hard to stop yourself from picking up more. But sometimes, despite scouring the bookstore or library shelves dozens of times, you just can't find the perfect book. There are thousands and thousands of books out there, but at the moment, nothing seems to pop out at you! It's a horrifying feeling, believe me, I've been there myself. Inside, your heart wants to pour itself into another novel so you can vent about it later, but you can't seem to choose
That's where the internet comes in. These days, you can find practically anything on it, and book recommendations are definitely one of them. Perhaps you stumbled upon this article, desperate for things to read. Maybe by the end of it, you'll find something that tickles your fancy!
So firstly, we'll look over the genres I'll be covering. The books to be listed are ones that I've read over the years, so a lot are similar in some ways. Every person has a genre, or genres, that they prefer to read more than others. My preferred genre is fantasy, so a majority of the novels that follow are fantasy ones. Keep in mind though, that fantasy is a very vast group, and two books termed under it can be completely different.

Let's start with classic books. One of my favorite classic authors is Enid Blyton. She wrote numerous children's books, targeted for young readers. Despite this, I still reread her works, as they bring back nostalgia, not to mention the pure joy of it. My favorite series of hers is The Magic Faraway Tree series. It revolves around three siblings who discover a magic tree and have adventures in it. It consists of four books: The Enchanted Wood, The Magic Faraway Tree, The Folk of the Faraway Tree and Up the Faraway Tree.
I also enjoy the Malory Towers series, surrounding Darrell as she explores school life in her boarding school, Malory Towers. It consists of six books, plus another six by Pamela Cox. This additional series surrounds Darrell's younger sister Felicity as she lives her own exciting school life. The O'clock Tales, The Magic Folk Collection, The Chimney Corner Collection, The Tales of Brer Rabbit and The Magic Wishing Chair Collection are some collections of little tales. Enid Blyton books are filled with magic, much more so than an adventure in some books. The strong belief in magic is what fuels these stories, thus appealing more to younger readers. There are exceptions, of course, like Malory Towers and The Adventure Series

One can never forget Harry Potter by J.K.Rowling! Possibly the biggest book franchise ever, this series of seven is brimming with magic as well. Unlike Enid Blyton books, though, the books are very intense. They are positioned in a more modern setting, with more vicious villains and intensified concepts. If you are a fan of action, adventure and magic- not to mention a tad of mystery- Harry Potter is definitely for you. The books revolve around a boy called Harry, who discovers he is a wizard. He then attends Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where he learns to perform magic- but also discovers more about his past life.

If you like especially long series with even longer books, consider Keeper of the Lost Cities by Shannon Messenger. If you are a regular on my blog, you've probably noticed that this is currently my favorite series. It has seven books, the eighth and ninth ones scheduled to come out soon. With plot-twisting secrets and cliffhangers that'll make you scream- and exciting relationships you'll adore for a lifetime- it is a source of mystery, action, and drama. Sophie Foster, the main protagonist, has a secret- she can read minds. Her whole life changes when Fitz Vacker, a boy she runs across, tells her she belongs to a different world. Sophie discovers she isn't human, and has some enemies who won't stop until they get what they want. Her life is now filled with secrets, some that can cost lives.

The last series I'll share today is Percy Jackson by Rick Riordan. If you like mythology, then you'll love this series, and practically anything else by the same author. Percy Jackson had five books, and loads of spinoffs. It's a series that I only began quite recently, as I haven't even finished it yet! The story is packed with action, and is about Percy Jackson, a boy with a life far from normal. And when he discovers he's the son of a Greek God- and that Greek Mythology is real- it doesn't get any better. Now Percy must go to Camp Half-Blood, training to battle monsters and prophecies even bigger...

These are all the books we have time for today- but don't worry as Part Two will be out soon! I hope you've got yourself a book to read, and if not, stay tuned for next week!
