Telepathy- A KOTLC Ability Analysis
I was looking over a list of posts I have written, and then realized it had been five weeks since my last fandom-based post, so here we are with another Keeper of the Lost Cities Analysis! I already did analyses of the eight main characters, so now we're moving to a much broader topic- Elvin Abilities.
Abilities play a vital role in Elvin society, and is their main source of power, as well as their main base for bias. We'll be covering every ability we possibly can; some that are well known, and others not so much. Firstly, the ability where it all began, Telepathy.
I'll admit, it's not my most favorite ability, but it's a very cool one. Even though the thought of letting someone enter my mind irks me, the idea of being able to search through memories and have a Cognate is exciting to think about. Some commonly know Telepaths in the series are, of course, Sophie Foster, Fitz Vacker, Alden Vacker, Tiergan, Prentice Endal, and Mr. Forkle.
As the name suggests, Telepaths have the ability to reach out into one's mind, and listen or search through their thought and memories. They can block their thoughts from other elves with a mental barrier as well, though other elves (like Lord Cassius and Fintan) without Telepathy have found clever ways to shield their minds too.
Sophie is an elf who's Telepathy reaches extremes no one has ever seen before. She can communicate with animals by reaching out to their minds, like how she did with Silveny, one of the only four alicorns alive. She even did this to Gildie the Flaredon, walking her through how to bottle Everblaze. It blows my mind how she does this, as if you wanted to communicate with a different species, you couldn't use language; but concept. Gildie obviously doesn't speak the Enlightened Tongue, so when Sophie had to instruct her, she would need to convey her message in a way that Gildie's mind could comprehend- not thoughts, not words, but raw concept.
Another extraordinary thing Sophie can do with her Telepathy is the ability to heal minds. When one's mind is broken, they no longer are present in the conscious world. Instead, their memories are distorted, scattered, and they are in a state where they do not think for themselves or function at all. Sophie has the ability to pull people out of this state by engulfing the victim's mind with powerful emotions like love. She has healed three elves: Alden Vacker, Fintan and Prentice Endal.
On a more casual note, we'll go in-depth on how Telpaths enter minds and read memories. In the books, Sophie often describes having to push against someone's mental blocking to enter their consciousness. The stronger the mental blocking, the harder it is to enter their mind. After successfully reaching their mental destination, Telepaths can dig through memories, or recover washed ones. They can even 'join' their surrounding companions' minds, which is useful in situations where silence must be maintained. Telepaths can even strengthen their own mental blockings, making them less vulnerable to others trying to pry into their minds. Mental energy is another concept described, which provides a boost to the one using their Telepathy on another. The two kinds of mental energy are energy from the mind and energy from the emotional center. While both provide a surge of power, mental energy from the emotional center is proved to be more effective.
Washers are specially trained Telepaths who can erase memories, burying them deep, deep down where they cannot be found again unless triggered. Some Washers have the ability to shatter memories, breaking them in such a way that only fragments are left. As of what we know now, shattered memories cannot be healed, as exhibited by the ones Lady Gisela erased from Keefe's mind. When enhanced, Washers can erase memories for good, in such a manner that they can't even be triggered again. Damel Kafuta does this to Sophie's human parents in Nightfall.
Finally, one of my favorite parts of Telepathy, Cognatism. Cognates are two Telepaths who share such a level of trust that their ability as a Telepath doubles when they are together. Only three pairs of Cognates are revealed in the series: Sophie and Fitz, Quinlin and Alden, and the two Mr. Forkles. Cognatism is very rare, and is purely based on trust as well as understanding each other's emotions. Cognates must not keep any secrets, as they hinder the connection achieved. Too many secrets or distrust and Cognatism can be lost, as with Alden and Quinlin. Cognates may even purchase each other Cognate Rings, made of a special metal that snap together when the Cognates' mental energies conjoin.
Well, that's about all the information I could gather about Telepathy. Let me know in the comments below if I forgot something, and I'll be sure to add it. I'll see you next week with a new post!
