Cold Waters

The waters of the poles are frigid, home to all sorts of life. Despite the inhospitable conditions they present, like most places they have an array of unimaginable discoveries, waiting to be found. As the temperature lowers, the more bizarre the life forms.
For example, the classic: narwhal, unicorn of the sea. This marine mammal has a 'tusk' protruding from its head, which is in fact a rather large canine. This tooth can be used to stun prey before consumption; not exactly the magical purpose we had in our heads. These amazing creatures aren't endangered yet, but rising global temperatures can pose a threat to the species.
A variety of whales can be found in cold waters as well. Beluga whales have thick layers of blubber to keep them warm. Killer whales, or orcas, are the world's apex predators. There are the wise Bowhead whales, with life spans up to two hundred years. Right whales are the Bowheads' close cousins, baleen whales of the Antarctic. Even massive blue whales thrive in the cold!
We must not forget penguins, the awkward-yet-graceful birds who made the sea their home. King penguins bask in the luxury of their icebergs. Gento penguins waddle along with their group, searching for a place to stay. Chinstraps swim elegantly in the sea, hunting for fish.
In the ocean itself lie clouds of krill, dancing in swirls, misting the waters with their pinkish-red hue.
Ice fish live in the dark, murky depths, their blood clear as glass. Baskets stars sweep the floor, setting an aesthetic to the toned sand. Octopuses are surprisingly abundant, their populations spreading from the bright tropical waters to the cold, frigid ones. Sea cucumbers settle here too, sluggishly chomping their way through life.
The cold waters are mysterious and unexplored. Combine the difficulties of venturing the deep sea and add frigid temperatures, and you'll get the consequences one must face to traverse this realm. Even the fish must worry about their blood freezing, let alone humans!
Nevertheless, the oceans around the poles are a source of inspiration.
Inspiration that is yet to be found.
